Rare 1872 Dollar Errors (List & Pictures)

1872 Dollar Errors — error coin photographs

On one 1872 dollar, the useful date clues are inside Liberty’s rocky seat rather than beside the normal numbers. On a Proof, the clearer target is the motto above the eagle.

These 1872 Liberty Seated dollar errors have estimated whole-coin values of $400–$55,000. A superb Proof brought $50,400 in January 2022, reflecting the complete coin’s quality rather than a separate charge for doubled lettering.

Choose the ordinary-strike or Proof comparison before inspecting the small marks.

1872 Dollar Extra Digits inside the Rock: Misplaced Date Error

The Philadelphia variety FS-301 has an extra 1 in the rock below Liberty’s shield. Remnants of extra 2s appear around the base’s edge above the normal 2.

The date punch touched the die too high before the date was placed correctly. Coins made from that die retained the earlier fragments within the seated figure’s base.

Breen-5491 is another name for the same misplaced-date feature. It is not a separate error to count alongside FS-301.

How to Identify

Locate the full 1872 date, then move upward into the rock. Compare the small 1 below the shield with an identified FS-301 photograph.

Above the main 2, inspect both the rock’s interior and its edge for the earlier 2 remnants. Low light from different sides helps separate raised fragments from shadows in the normal rock design.

Keep the main date and complete rocky base in one photograph. The extra 1 and 2s should agree as a group rather than relying on one line that happens to resemble a digit.

A date placed high or a thick-looking number does not establish this variety. Wear and cleaning can also make the small remnants difficult to recognize.

What It’s Worth

$400–$15,000 is the estimated whole-coin range from worn examples to attractive unworn pieces. Original surfaces and clear digit fragments support stronger comparisons.

An OC-3 example graded PCGS MS64+ sold for $7,821.60 in January 2024. That grade describes an unworn dollar with relatively few marks.

The result values the full coin, not a fixed fee for the extra digits. A worn or cleaned piece needs a closer condition match before using that sale.

1872 Dollar Separated Letter Edges in the Motto: Proof Doubled Reverse Error

Philadelphia Proof dollars show strong extra outlines in IN GOD WE above the eagle. The reverse die carried that repeated detail before striking.

A Proof is a specially made collector coin. Its doubled letters do not require the coin to have received two blows in different positions.

Specialists call the reverse die 1872 PA and describe it as the year’s shared Proof reverse. Its normal use across the issue matters when considering any claimed variety premium.

How to Identify

Start with IN GO and the small bars at the top and bottom of I. Follow the extra raised outlines across the motto rather than judging a single bright edge.

Move the light while keeping the coin in place. Rounded repeated letter contours differ from reflections or low flat shelves produced by striking movement.

Confirm both the 1872 date and Proof identity before selecting a value comparison. The same reverse die also served in 1873, but a later-dated coin is a separate issue.

Keep a graded Proof in its holder and use a clear full-motto photograph. This preserves the relationship among the letters without risking the reflective surface.

What It’s Worth

$1,500–$55,000 is the estimated whole-coin range from impaired or lightly worn Proofs to exceptional examples. Preservation and contrast between the design and background drive much of the price.

PCGS records $50,400 for a PR67 Cameo in January 2022. Cameo describes a frosted design against a more reflective field.

The shared Proof-die doubling is not an automatic extra amount added to the Proof’s value. An ordinary example with the same letters does not acquire the exceptional sale coin’s preservation.

Conclusion

The ordinary-strike variety requires matching several misplaced digit fragments within the rock. The Proof comparison instead follows a repeated motto pattern from a shared reverse die.

Keep the date, finish, and complete feature together when choosing photographs or prices. Much of the wide value range comes from the quality of the silver dollar itself, so a correct small-detail match is only one part of the assessment.
