2022 Quarter Errors — error coin photographs

A Sally Ride quarter struck on a nickel blank sold for $10,181 in April 2023. Its cropped lettering and different metal explain why it deserves a different comparison from a normal coin with faint doubling.

The 2022 quarter errors and common lookalikes below span $0.25–$12,000 in estimated value. Read the woman’s name and mintmark before inspecting the matching design, surface, or blank.

Clue What it may show Estimated value
Shared minor front doubling Common inherited design feature $0.25–$2 for ordinary circulated examples
Step at Wilma LIBERTY rim Retained die break $50–$600 for stronger matched marks
Wilma copper portrait face Missing front clad layer $100–$1,500
Cropped Sally lettering on smaller alloy disk Nickel-blank strike $3,000–$12,000

Standard clad quarters weigh 5.67 grams and measure 24.26 millimeters with grooved edges. An S mintmark can appear on an ordinary clad collector coin, a clad Proof, or a 99.9% silver Proof weighing 6.343 grams.

1. 2022 Quarter Small Repeated Contours: Doubled Designs Error

Philadelphia Maya Angelou, Sally Ride, Wilma Mankiller, and Anna May Wong quarters share front doubling at TRUST, the first 2, and the nostril. It began in an earlier tool used to produce many dies, so the shared pattern is common.

Denver Sally and Nina Otero-Warren quarters have a northeast extra eye outline. Separate reports concern Maya’s earring, Philadelphia Sally’s collar and chin, Denver Sally’s ear and hair, and Anna’s ear-side or reverse details.

How to Identify

For the common Philadelphia pattern, inspect above TRUST’s last T and the first 2, and below the nostril. Do not assume a widespread feature identifies a scarce individual die.

Maya’s individual earring comparison concerns traces inside, below, and right of it; shared ear and name-letter doubling is separate. Philadelphia Sally’s collar repeats eastward and chin downward, while Denver Sally’s separate ear and upper-hair traces point downward.

Use Anna-specific images for Anna claims. Flat shelves and reflections should be excluded before assigning any exact pattern.

What It’s Worth

Common inherited doubling may leave an ordinary circulated coin at $0.25–$2. An identified individual doubled-design variety has a separate estimated range of $5–$150.

The larger range requires a specific match and suitable preservation. A high asking price cannot make the shared front pattern scarce.

2. 2022 Quarter A Stepped Break or Raised Lump: Die Cracks and Chips Error

Philadelphia Wilma examples show a stepped break near LIBERTY and, in later stages, a large reverse crack. A broken part of the die remained trapped, allowing some design to survive in the affected region.

Separate small reports include Washington’s mouth or nose on Maya and Sally issues, Anna’s eye or finger, and Nina’s nose or flower area. Maya’s raised bird-side twig has been described as a scratch or crack in the die.

How to Identify

At Wilma’s twelve-o’clock LIBERTY rim, compare the retained design and step rather than expecting a fully featureless cud. A completely detached rim fragment would leave a different appearance.

Inspect the smaller marks with their own design references and use side lighting to confirm raised metal. For an Anna reverse-cud claim, the patch must connect to the rim rather than form an isolated interior blob.

What It’s Worth

Small chips and narrow lines suggest $2–$50; strong clearly matched marks may fall around $50–$600.

In July 2022, Coin World quoted Mike Diamond reporting Wilma error sales of $300 or more. That is a contemporary market report, not a single documented auction price for every die stage.

3. 2022 Quarter A Ghost Shape from the Other Side: Die Clash Error

Sally Ride reports describe Washington’s neck or throat outline beside her and the window. A collision between dies without a blank can transfer those outlines onto the tools and then later coins.

Philadelphia Maya examples instead show part of her face behind Washington’s ear and traces near the bird’s left-wing feathers. Nina candidates require a match to Nina’s own opposite design.

How to Identify

Compare both faces at the same scale and follow a recognizable transferred shape. Sally’s window frame and Earth are normal design elements, not automatically clash evidence.

Use the correct positions for Maya rather than borrowing Sally’s window-side trace. Nicknames such as Ghost Comet or Vomit Comet do not replace the opposite-design match.

What It’s Worth

Genuine clashes have a broad estimated range of $10–$1,000, from faint traces to bold attractive examples.

The upper end requires strong identification and visibility. Random scratches, polishing lines, or a normal window feature do not qualify merely because a listing uses a familiar nickname.

4. 2022 Quarter Detail Is Blocked or Material Remains: Struck Through Error

A Maya owner reported attached material near UNITED STATES and the upper rays. Other Maya reports concern missing front detail, while an Anna S example is pictured as struck through material without a settled finish or exact location.

These are separate coins and obstruction claims. A Nina G that resembles C is not enough to prove blocked detail.

How to Identify

Leave attached material undisturbed and inspect whether the strike formed around its boundary. Glue or dirt added later does not establish retained mint material.

Compare weak detail with a normal coin of the same design, checking for scraping and broader wear. On Nina, examine the G’s actual stroke instead of diagnosing an error from the phrase IN COD WE TRUST.

Identify the Anna S coin’s finish and metal independently. The mint letter alone cannot distinguish its possible ordinary, clad Proof, or silver Proof issue.

What It’s Worth

Minor genuine grease-blocked features suggest $5–$60, while larger clear impressions or authenticated retained material suggest $50–$300.

The estimate follows what is physically present. A normal letter shape or later attached substance has no equivalent error premium.

5. 2022 Quarter Dark Color on Anna May Wong: Improper Annealing Error

Year guides and a Philadelphia seller listing report Anna quarters with abnormal color attributed to annealing. This heating stage prepares blanks for striking.

A mint heating problem can alter the surface, but later heat, soil, or chemicals can also darken a coin. Even uniform color does not prove when it developed.

How to Identify

Establish the metal and finish, then compare with a normal Anna quarter under neutral light. Inspect texture, the edge, and whether the color follows scratches or corroded patches.

A clad coin should retain its normal layered construction. Leave the surface untreated so an examiner can distinguish original blank treatment from later alteration.

What It’s Worth

An authenticated mint annealing error suggests $25–$250. Attractive original surfaces provide a stronger comparison than corroded or rubbed metal.

No particular completed sale is supplied for the Anna report. A normally toned silver collector coin is not an annealing error simply because it differs in color from pocket change.

6. 2022 Quarter The Copper Core Receives Washington: Missing Clad Layer Error

A Denver Wilma quarter graded NGC MS62 is cataloged with the front outer layer missing and an actual weight of 4.8 grams. Its reverse retains the normal pale layer.

The coin provides a concrete comparison for one-face layer loss. A Maya candidate still needs its own physical evidence and measurements.

How to Identify

Inspect original design on exposed copper and the edge transition to the surviving reverse layer. Confirm reduced weight instead of deciding from color alone.

Grinding can remove weight while cutting finished design, and plating can change color without removing a layer. Gray appearance alone is normal for many Maya quarters.

What It’s Worth

Genuine one-face missing-layer quarters suggest $100–$1,500, depending on preservation and clarity.

The GreatCollections Wilma listing establishes the Denver MS62 example and its 4.8-gram measurement. It supplies no sale amount here, and that weight must not be assigned to a different design.

7. 2022 Quarter An Untouched Crescent beside the Portrait: Off-Center Strike Error

A Maya guide reports a Philadelphia example about 10% off center. The blank sat partly outside the dies, leaving an unstruck portion and losing some intended design beyond the edge.

Nina off-center listings need their own identifiable specimens. A generic percentage cannot establish one particular coin’s displacement.

How to Identify

Compare both faces with a normal coin of the same design. Corresponding cutoff beside original blank metal supports whole-blank displacement, while one narrow rim may reflect a shifted die.

Inspect the crescent for filing and preserve the date, mintmark, and woman’s name in photographs. Do not transfer Maya’s 10% description to Nina.

What It’s Worth

Authenticated dated examples suggest $50–$1,200, with smaller shifts generally toward the lower end.

The reported Maya example should not receive a much more dramatic offset’s comparison. An actual Nina candidate needs verified displacement before the range applies.

8. 2022 Quarter Sally Ride on a Smaller Uniform-Alloy Blank: Wrong Planchet Error

The Philadelphia NGC MS67 Sally Ride error was struck on a nickel blank.

Parts of LIBERTY at the top and the lower QUARTER DOLLAR and DR. SALLY RIDE lettering did not fit.

A nickel blank has copper-nickel alloy throughout instead of the quarter’s copper core and bonded faces. This makes it different from a missing-clad-layer quarter.

2022 Quarter: Dr. Sally Ride — Wrong Planchet / Off-Metal Strike.

How to Identify

Compare actual measurements and composition with a nickel blank’s starting standards of 5 grams and 21.21 millimeters. Striking can spread the smaller blank, and those standards are not a supplied individual measurement.

Inspect naturally cropped lettering and exclude a filed-down normal quarter. Nondestructive metal testing should support the uniform alloy rather than a clad structure with altered surfaces.

What It’s Worth

Authenticated examples suggest $3,000–$12,000, with original surfaces and clear wrong-blank identity supporting the higher comparisons.

NGC reports $10,181 including the buyer’s fee for the MS67 Philadelphia Sally Ride coin at GreatCollections on April 30, 2023. That result belongs to this specific smaller-blank specimen.

Conclusion

The five American Women designs offer different clues, even when their quarters share a year or common front-side doubling. Match the woman’s design and mint before using a close-up or a high-price example.

Leave retained material intact, document actual metal loss, and distinguish normal letters from blocked detail. The Sally Ride nickel-blank sale is useful evidence for its category, while widespread inherited doubling can remain ordinary pocket change.
