Rare 1875 Quarter Errors (List & Pictures)

1875 Liberty Seated Quarter, obverse and reverse

The useful clue is below the date, where three tiny number tops interrupt the border. This guide to 1875 quarter errors covers that misplaced-date variety, estimated at $75–$1,500 for the whole coin.

A different-year example, an unworn 1891 misplaced-date quarter, sold for $1,057.50 in August 2017. Examine the lower border before using that comparison to judge a worn 1875 coin.

1875 Quarter Number Tops Hidden in the Border: Misplaced Date MPD-001 Error

The normal 1875 date sits above small tooth-shaped border marks. On the Philadelphia MPD-001 variety, parts of an earlier date appear among those teeth.

The top of an extra 8 lies beneath the regular 8, and an extra 7 lies beneath 7. The extra top of 5 is between the regular 7 and 5.

A worker placed the date punch too low while preparing the steel stamping tool. The correctly placed date above it did not remove every trace of that earlier attempt.

MPD means misplaced date, and 001 identifies this cataloged pattern. It does not mean that the coin itself received an extra complete strike.

How to Identify

Hold the date upright and use a magnifier to examine the border beneath 87. Compare the small raised shapes with the normal teeth beside them.

Next move to the space between the final 7 and 5. Look for the third digit top there, rather than directly below the last 5.

Check all three positions against a clear MPD-001 photograph. One stray line near the date cannot establish the whole pattern.

Move the light across the border from each side. The digit remains should rise above the surface; a scratch cuts into it.

Include the entire date and lower border in photographs before taking tighter views. That wider image preserves the spacing needed to match the variety.

Wear can soften these small curves, and cleaning can disturb the nearby surface. Do not scrape the border to make a faint trace look clearer.

What It’s Worth

$75–$1,500 is the estimated whole-coin range for an identified 1875 MPD-001 quarter. The surviving digit tops, overall wear, and original surface condition affect where a coin fits.

The supplied ANACS example has wear and cleaning. That condition needs a lower comparison than a sharply preserved, untouched coin.

An 1891 misplaced-date quarter graded PCGS MS64 sold for $1,057.50 on August 2, 2017. It is an unworn different-year example, not a sale of the reported 1875 coin.

Conclusion

Work across the lower border in order: beneath 8, beneath 7, then between 7 and 5. Matching the three raised tops is more useful than finding one unusual mark.

Keep the condition comparison just as specific. A cleaned, worn quarter can show the genuine misplaced date without matching the value of an unworn coin from another year.
